One week, moving camp everyday
Marabout is the name for a holy man or woman and also for his/her place of burial. There are many of these holy places in the desert and we will visit a number of them in the course of a few days.
After an early arrival in Monastir, we will travel directly to Matmata where we will spend the night. In the morning we will drive on to Douz to do a little shopping for essential desert items - a burnous and a chech to keep you warm and sand-free - and proceed by 4x4s to our starting point near Ben Moktar where our team of Bedouin guides and their camels will meetus and provide our first meal in the desert.
For the next few days we will get up with the sun (easier than you think!) and breakfast together on freshly baked bread, walk in the coolest hours of the morning at a comfortable pace and then stop to rest while our guides prepare our lunch. Once the heat of the early afternoon has passed, we will walk for another hour or so before reaching our camp and a well deserved dinner. You don't need a particular level of fitness for this journey as we only travel as fast as the slowest person in the group. Children are welcome to join us and there will be opportunities to ride a camel if you get tired (or if you just want to try it out).
As we move south, we will pass the buried village of Aouinet Rajjah, then reach Sidi Boujouihif - the burial place of a powerful marabout. During our return journey, we will also stop along the way to collect some desert roses "in the wild".
On our final day in the desert, the 4x4s will pick us up early and take us back to Monastir where we will spend the night at the Monastir Centre Hotel. Transfer to Monastir airport is scheduled early on the day of travel.
