Practicalities

In the desert you will need...

  • A good sleeping bag (temperatures can drop well below 0°C in the winter)
  • Survival bag/large bin bag to protect your sleeping bag from humidity and occasional rain or you might want to bring a tent (small and lightweight) - it protects you from rain and creepy crawlies. We will provide mattresses and blankets
  • Walking shoes / sandals
  • Comfortable clothes for walking and riding camels (trousers recommended)
  • Warm clothes (nights can be chilly)
  • Towel and toiletries
  • Any medicine you require
  • Good sunglasses
  • Suncream
  • A small rucksack for walking in the desert
  • A water bottle
  • Wet wipes
  • Toilet paper and matches (to dispose of paper on the spot)
  • Torch and batteries
  • Zippable plastic bags (sand gets EVERYWHERE so you will need to protect electronic equipment as much as possible)

It's better (for camels) if you bring rucksacks and sports bags rather than suitcases.

Temperature between May and September are too high for most people to travel comfortably by foot and camel in the desert so we don't schedule any of our journeys during that time. However, it is possible to organize short trips to the desert by air-conditioned 4x4s on made-to-measure journeys even during the summer.

You don't need to be super fit to travel with us -
we only travel as fast as the slowest person in the group - but if you have any concerns about your state of health, talk to us before booking.

The Tunisian Currency is the dinar and you cannot buy it outwith the country. You can exchange cash at the airport on arrival or use your visa (sometimes mastercard) to withdraw from a cash machine.

Food and Drink
Breakfast in the desert will be bread freshly cooked in the ashes (galette), jam, dates, tea and coffee. The food is traditional and cooked by us and our guides on the camp fire. It is vegan (couscous with vegetable stew, pasta and sauces, etc) with the option of adding cheese/tuna. you might want to bring some treats to share for the afternoon siestas and after dinner chats round the fire at night.

In the desert, we provide unlimited water from the local wells which the camels carry for us in water bags throughout our journey. If you are concerned and/or have a sensitive digestive system, you might want to bring water purifying tablets or a bottle with an inbuilt filter.

If you have any specific dietary requirements, please talk to us before booking - vegetarian diets and food intolerances are unknown in Tunisia and require some creativity and patience when eating out in restaurants!
