Our journeys start from either Tunis or Monastir - we will always meet you at the airport and accompany you throughout your journey. We travel by air-conditioned 4x4s and, time permitting, we stop en route to show you the amazing sights Tunisia has to offer - the beauty of the Great Mosque in Kairouan, the perfect Roman remains of El Jem or Sbeitla, the troglodyte homes of Matmata made famous by Luke Skywalker's house in Star Wars IV.
On arrival in Douz ("the door to the Sahara") we accompany you to the souk (market) where we recommend that you buy a burnous (the hooded cloak worn in the desert, traditionally made of camel hair though cotton is easier to wash and less smelly!) and a chech (the turban). These things are not compulsory but are the most effective way to protect you from sand, wind and night-time chills as well as providing you with excellent photo opportunities for would-be Jedi knights (and will set you back by only £40 maximum).
Once we reach the desert we abandon modern transport to travel only on foot and by camel as we believe this is the only way to really appreciate the landscape. Should you wish to extend your trip by either arriving early or leaving later than our journey is scheduled, we can help you with making further arrangements.
More and more, we are asked to organize journeys for specific groups - we have accompanied couples on honeymoon, meditation retreats, dance holidays and people on solitary prayer. The desert season lasts from October to April and we will be happy to accommodate your dates and requirements - between May and September temperatures are too high to travel comfortably on foot and by camel (though short trips by air-conditioned 4x4s are still possible). As an alternative to travelling every day, we can set up camp near an oasis from which you can organize your own activities - yoga, meditation, painting, etc.
We can also base made-to-measure holidays in a hotel in Monastir or Djerba and you can choose to travel to the desert as a 2 or 3 days trip - this is an easier introduction to desert life as we usually visit Ksar Ghilane, a hot water spring in the Great Eastern Erg which has the advantage of several campsites with modern comforts.
Contact us with your requirements and we will present you with some proposals for itineraries for you to choose from. Alternatively, have a look at our open journeys Marabout Trail, Caravanserai and the Festival of the Sahara.
